The Letters of Samuel Rutherford
“The nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in all the
writings of mere men.” — C. H. Spurgeon
The Letters of Samuel Rutherford are among the most
treasured devotional writings of the Reformed tradition — and you can read
the complete collection here, free.
Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600–1661) was a Scottish Presbyterian pastor and
theologian — and one of the Scottish commissioners to the
Westminster Assembly that produced the
Westminster Confession of Faith we still hold to today. Banished from his
pulpit and exiled to Aberdeen for his convictions, he poured a pastor's
heart into letters: words of comfort, counsel, and overflowing love for
the Lord Jesus, written to the very people he was forbidden to preach to.
Generations have found them a means of grace. Richard Baxter said of them,
“Hold off the Bible, such a book the world never saw.” They are
Christ-saturated, tender, and bracing all at once — a balm for the
suffering and a summons to love Christ more.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

Why we share it
Covenant Church is a Reformed church in Burbank standing in the very
tradition Rutherford helped shape. We offer his letters as they were
given to us — freely — to point you to the Christ who is, as Rutherford
loved to say, altogether lovely. If they stir your heart, we'd love for
you to come and worship with us, or to
keep reading with our Bible reading
checklist and plans.
